A few years ago I bought some software and locked myself in the basement. About a year later I threw that software away (you can only play solitaire for so long) and bought something useful. Since then I've been design websites and online marketing programs for fun and profit - my banker says I must do it mostly for fun - he wrote that on my last overdraft statement. I took him off my Christmas card list.

Most people say they have a kid or cousin or nephew or trained baboon that is going to design their website for cheap. That's fine really I don't mind - except of course if you're gonna use the baboon - that's just plain spurious (I have word of the day toilet paper). This is where we get at the fallacy of "If you build it they will come". Let's face it we're not a lunatic Kevin Costner mowing down his family's source of income to play baseball with stars of a memorable era. But I suppose if we had Mr "Luke I am your father" James Earl Jones running around telling people about your website that would be pretty cool.

SEM is all about finding  those folks out there with new credit cards and money to burn and telling them about your website. The best/fastest/cheapest way to do that is through search engines. You sell fuzzy blue widgets - Joe Surfer wants to buy a fuzzy blue widget for his girlfriend. It's their anniversary. Joe goes to Google or Yahoo or some other search engine and types in 'fuzzy blue widget'. If he doesn't find your site in the first 20 or so listings you aren't going to be the one charging his credit card. There are many ways we can get Joe Surfer to find your site. I'd be happy to let you pay me to tell you about them. Call me - we'll do lunch.
